Start indoors and plant outside early (frost-tolerant) for a tasty California treat in late summer. Vigorous bushy plant grows to 1.5 m (5 ft) and produces big purple flower heads, maturing to 10 cm (4 in) head buds. Fertilize heavily with blood meal as plants are heavy feeders. Great sauteed and as a delectable dipper. (Photo above was taken in the Edmonton garden of Dr. I R Evans of a government agriculture researcher.)
