Save the Monarch Butterfly – Plant Milkweed! Milkweeds are important host plants for monarch butterflies, and they provide nectar to a wide range of butterflies, moths and bees.
Sow seed outdoors as soon as soil can be worked. Cover seed very lightly and keep the soil moist until all seedlings appear. For earlier flowers start seed indoors 2 weeks in advance of intended date for moving the plants to the garden. Lightly cover the seed with soil. Germinates best at at 24 C (74 F), usually in 10 days. Transplant into individual pots to grow on, be careful not to disturb roots when transplanting to the garden. All it asks is well-drained soil (moist or damp soils are just fine!) and plenty of sun. Garden spacing 60 cm (2 ft).
