Did you know that Corn, Beans, and Squash are called the three sisters? This is a growing technique developed by indigenous farmers who often inter-planted this trio because they thrive together, much like three inseparable sisters. Each of the sisters contributes something to the planting.
The Corn, acting as older sisters often do, offer support to the climbing Beans.
The Beans, the giving sister, pulls Nitrogen from the air and brings it to the soil for the benefit of all three.
The large leaves of the sprawling Squash protect the threesome by creating living mulch that shades the soil, keeping it cool and moist and preventing weeds.
Together, the three sisters provide both sustainable soil fertility as well as a healthy diet. Perfection! We have selected some varieties that pair well together, keeping the 3 sisters’ in mind.
