GROWING GUIDE - BLUEBERRIES
BLUEBERRY PLANTING & CARE
Looking to grow beautiful, healthy blueberries in your garden? You've come to the right place! This comprehensive growing guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from planting to harvest.
PLANTING
Location: Blueberries thrive in full sun and well-drained, organic-rich soil.
Spacing: Space plants at least 3ft. apart, or farther if desired, to allow for proper growth. Soil: Avoid heavy soils, as they can hinder root development.
To maintain the acidic soil conditions blueberries need to flourish, mulch with materials such as acidic peat, wood chips, pine needles, or straw to a depth of 12 in. For best results, select a planting site that is free of weeds and well-prepared. If natural soil conditions are not ideal, raised beds can provide better drainage and growing conditions.
Blueberries also perform well in patio containers, making them a great option for those with limited outdoor space, such as apartment or condo dwellers. If planting directly in the ground, prepare a hole about 2ft. in diameter and 1ft. deep for each plant. To ensure optimal growth in various soil types, mix peat moss into the planting area to help maintain acidity.
PRUNING
If young plants have limited branching, the longest stems can be cut back by one-third in early spring to encourage fuller growth. Once plants begin producing fruit, dense growth should be thinned by pruning out the oldest stems at ground level, selecting strong side shoots to encourage new growth.
WATERING
A consistent supply of moisture is crucial during the growing season, as allowing the roots to dry out can weaken the plants. For best results, plant blueberries in an area where irrigation is readily available to keep the root zone consistently moist.
WINTER CARE
For winter protection, a heavy snow covering is ideal. In areas with little snow, mulch around the base of the plant with straw, leaves, or hay to provide insulation and protect the roots from freezing temperatures.

Is there anything blueberries should NOT be planted close too?
Same question for blackcurrents

Great question! With blueberries, the main thing to watch out for is soil pH compatibility. Since blueberries love acidic soil, avoid planting them near crops that prefer neutral or alkaline conditions — like tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, and broccoli — as amending the soil for those plants can raise the pH and stress your blueberries. Keep fennel far away too, since it releases compounds that can inhibit growth in nearby plants.
For blackcurrants, the biggest no-no is planting them near five-needled pines like White Pine, as blackcurrants can host a fungal disease that seriously damages those trees. Also steer clear of fennel for the same reason as blueberries, and try not to plant blackcurrants right next to gooseberries since they share common pests and diseases that spread between them. Beyond that, you’re good to go!

How do blueberries grow? Are they like a vine ?

Hey Angie!
Blueberries grow on bushes, not vines. They are deciduous shrubs that can get quite large over time, but they stay upright.
They prefer acidic soil and lots of sun to really thrive. Let me know if you have any other questions about growing them!
