Looking to grow beautiful, healthy cherry trees in your garden? You've come to the right place! This comprehensive growing guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from planting to harvest.
PLANTING
Carefully remove the seedling from its wrapping, taking care not to disturb the roots. Plant the seedling 1 inch deeper than the top of the root plug, then backfill with high-quality topsoil.
Watering: Water thoroughly every 2–3 days, ensuring the soil stays consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilizing: For strong root development, feed the plant every 2 weeks using a fertilizer such as 10-52-17 Rose & Strawberry food.
Soil: Evans and Rose Cherries prefer a dry location, as allowing the roots to dry out in August and September is crucial for hardening off the growing tips.
Avoid planting in deep black loam soil, as it can lead to excessive growth, making the tree more vulnerable to winter damage. After harvesting, it’s important to let the roots dry out to prevent late-season growth.
FALL & WINTER CARE
In late fall, after the leaves have dropped, provide a deep watering to help the tree store moisture for winter.
To protect the roots during their first winter, apply a layer of dry leaves as mulch to insulate against freezing temperatures.
