PLANTING

Choosing the right location is critical for grape success. Plant vines in full sun with excellent air circulation. A south-facing slope or planting against a south-facing wall provides added warmth and helps grapes ripen fully in cooler climates.

Prepare soil by blending organic matter and, if needed, coarse sand to improve drainage. Install a sturdy wire trellis or support system at planting time to guide vine growth and prevent damage later.

TIMING

Plant grapes in early spring once the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost has passed.

SOIL & WATERING

Soil: Well-drained soil is essential—grapes do not tolerate soggy conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, grapes prefer moderate watering. Avoid overwatering, which can reduce fruit quality and promote disease.

FERTILIZING

Apply a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring as growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

PRUNING & MAINTENANCE

Proper pruning is essential for grape production, as fruit forms on new growth from the previous year’s wood.

• Prune vines during dormancy, late winter to very early spring, before buds swell.
• Remove weak, damaged, or excess growth, keeping only the strongest canes.
• Annual pruning improves airflow, controls vine size, and increases fruit quality.
