KIWI PLANTING & CARE
Kiwi (Actinidia arguta) is a vigorous vine that thrives in a sunny, sheltered location with protection from strong winds. These plants require both male and female vines for proper pollination. With the right care and support, kiwis will reward you with an abundant harvest!
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:
• Choose a wind-protected, sunny location with well-drained soil
• Space plants 5-10ft. apart, or further if space allows
• Plant with the crown at soil level to ensure healthy root development
• Kiwis grow similarly to grapes and require a sturdy trellis or arbor for support
CARE TIPS:
Training & Pruning: Year 1: Establish a main stem about 4-5ft. high. Once it reaches this height, pinch the top couple of inches to encourage branching. Following seasons: Train the plant to grow laterally, these branches will produce fruiting canes.
After fruiting: Remove spent canes to make space for new fruiting growth.
Watering & Feeding: Water generously during fruiting periods to promote proper fruit formation. Fertilize regularly with Fruit Tree & Shrub Fertilizer (item #EW10) to encourage healthy growth.
Winter Protection: In the first winter, lay the vine down and cover it with leaves for insulation. With patience, kiwis will begin to bear fruit on 2-year-old wood, though it may take 3 or more years for full production. Proper training and care will ensure a productive and thriving kiwi vine!
