STRAWBERRY PLANTING & CARE

Looking to grow beautiful, healthy strawberries in your garden? You've come to the right place! This comprehensive growing guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from planting to harvest.

QUICK FACTS

  • Soil: Rich In
  • Spacing: Plants 20 In
  • Best planted in spring or fall
  • Requires regular watering during establishment
  • Benefits from mulching to retain moisture

PLANTING

Upon arrival, soak strawberry plants in water for two hours before planting. If immediate planting is not possible, moisten the roots and store them in the refrigerator crisper for up to two weeks. Choose a well-drained location with soil rich in organic matter, such as leaf mold, and avoid wet, soggy areas.

Plant with the crown level with the soil surface, spacing plants 20 in. apart. Ensure roots are spread evenly and hang down their full length without crowding. Firmly pack soil around the roots and water frequently until growth is established.

Consistent watering is especially important when fruit is sizing and ripening. Strawberry plants form fruit buds for the following year’s crop between late August and September. Proper care during this period will help maximize next year’s yield.

Apply T&T Rose & Strawberry Fertilizer in late August to support healthy fruit production.

WINTER PROTECTION

Winter cover is recommended in exposed locations. A deep layer of snow provides natural insulation, but if snowfall is unreliable, cover plants with a mixture of leaves and twigs or straw. Do not apply winter covering until cold weather has fully set in.

Gradually remove the covering in spring as temperatures warm.

WINTERING HANGING STRAWBERRIES

(Strawberries grown in pots or barrels, such as Seascape Strawberries item #7515) Strawberry plants left in containers above ground are vulnerable to freezing and thawing cycles in early spring, which can cause plant loss. To protect potted strawberries over winter, heel them into the ground and cover them with leaves or straw. After the first hard frost, dig a hole to accommodate the pots, ensuring the top of the pot sits at ground level, just as if planted directly in the soil.

Firm in, water, and cover for the winter. For large barrels, lay the barrel on its side and cover thoroughly with leaves or straw. If possible, dig a shallow hole to partially bury the barrel before covering.

In spring, uncover plants gradually, following the same process as with in-ground strawberries. FOR MORE TIPS ON CARE, PRUNING AND FERTILIZING, REFER TO: SHRUBS, TREES & FRUIT TREES
