FALL PLANTING

Fall planting refers to sowing seeds in late fall or early winter for the following spring’s garden. By planting in fall, you allow Mother Nature to determine when conditions are right for germination.
This often results in earlier spring growth and stronger, more weather-resilient plants.

QUICK FACTS

  • Fall planting allows seeds to germinate earlier in spring
  • Best suited for consistently cold climates

COLD IS BEST

Fall planting works best in areas where temperatures remain consistently cold. Repeated freezing and thawing can damage seeds, while stable frozen ground helps protect them until spring.

Gardens that become swampy after rainfall may not be suitable for fall planting, as standing water can cause seeds to rot.

PLANTING

Prepare your garden in fall by clearing away debris from the growing season. Work compost or other organic material into the soil to improve structure and fertility.

Plant seeds following standard spring planting depth and spacing as listed on the seed packet, then water well.

You can dedicate a small section of your garden to fall planting to enjoy an early spring harvest before your main garden is producing.

Vegetables suitable for fall planting:
Arugula, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Collards, Dill, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Mustard, Parsnips, Peas, Radishes, Spinach, Swiss Chard
