PLANTING
Geranium seeds can be pre-germinated by placing them between two layers of damp paper towels inside a plastic bag. Keep the bag in a warm location for 2-4 days until the seeds begin to sprout. Once sprouted, transfer seeds to Jiffy-7s or a well-draining soil medium, covering lightly.
Place pots or Jiffy-7s in a tray and mist to keep the soil moist.
TIMING
• Start geranium seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost • Provide continuous light (24 hours per day) for the first 3-4 days, or until the first true leaves emerge • Reduce lighting to 16 hours per day after the first true leaves develop
SOIL & WATERING
• Use a well-draining potting mix or Jiffy-7s for seedlings • Keep the soil moist but not saturated to prevent damping-off • Once established, allow the soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly
FERTILIZING
Fertilize weekly with Rose & Strawberry Fertilizer 10-52-17 (item #3256) and Organic Liquid Seaweed (item #3249) for strong root development. During active growth, feed every 2 weeks using a water-soluble fertilizer at half strength.
MAINTENANCE
• To encourage blooming, deadhead spent flowers regularly • To promote bushy growth and prevent legginess, pinch stems at the 4-6 leaf stage • Can be kept as a house plant or just for the winter • Geraniums can be re-potted in spring to refresh the soil and encourage new growth
