PREPARATION FOR PLANTING
Loosen the soil: Use a roto tiller to churn soil 4–5 in. deep. Remove large stones, roots, and debris.
Grade for drainage: Ensure the area is smooth and level to prevent water pooling.
Add soil amendments (if needed): Spread 1–2 in. of peat moss or sandy loam and mix into the top layer. Incorporate starter fertilizer as directed on the package.
Smooth & firm: Rake the surface level, then roll or tamp until firm enough that footprints barely leave an imprint.
SEEDING
Seed application: Use the appropriate lawn seed mix for your conditions. Apply half the seed in one direction, then the other half at right angles for even coverage. Use a spreader or hand-broadcast.
Cover lightly: Rake gently to work seed into the top 1/8 in. of soil (about 3 mm).
Mulch & water: Apply a light mulch (optional) to retain moisture and protect seed. Water with a fine mist and keep the soil consistently moist until germination.
FERTILIZING
Apply a slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 32-0-8) about two weeks after seeding, or follow your product label for timing and rates.
WATERING
Keep the soil evenly moist by misting with a sprinkler or nozzle. Avoid puddling or runoff. Continue consistent watering for at least 30 days as the lawn establishes.
GERMINATION TIME
- Ryegrass: 7–8 days
- Kentucky Bluegrass: up to 28 days
FIRST MOWING
When grass reaches 3–4 in., mow with blades set high. Avoid close mowing in the first season.
LAWN CARE
Fertilizing: Feed in early spring and fall using a balanced slow-release formula. Follow your fertilizer label for the correct rate.
Watering: Water early in the morning, deeply but infrequently once established.
Overseeding: Overseed thin or damaged areas in spring or fall for a thicker lawn.
Mowing: Mow dry grass at 3–4 in. Remove clippings unless mulching.
