HARVESTING

• Pears should be harvested before they fully ripen on the tree to avoid a mealy texture or internal rot
• As a general rule, pick pears when their skin starts changing color but while they are still very firm
• Store harvested pears in the refrigerator for a few days or more to extend their shelf life

RIPENING

To ripen pears, remove them from the refrigerator and leave them at room temperature for a few days. Check for ripeness by applying gentle pressure to the flesh just below the stem:
• If the pear is still very hard, it is not yet ripe.
• If the pear feels slightly soft, it is ready to eat. To speed up ripening, place pears in a paper bag with a banana to release natural ethylene gas.
