PLANTING
• Keep bulbs at room temperature before planting until root knobs and sprouts appear
• Optionally, place bulbs in a small amount of moist peat to encourage sprouting
• Plant in a partially shaded location, protected from intense midday sun
• Use humus-rich, well-draining soil
• Initially, cover bulbs with ½ in. of soil, then gradually add soil as sprouts grow until the bulb is covered with 1 in. of soil
TIMING
• Plant outdoors only after the soil has warmed in spring
• Callas require warm soil to start growing
SOIL & WATERING
• Soil should be rich in organic matter and drain well
• Keep plants consistently moist throughout the growing season
FERTILIZING
• Calla lilies benefit from a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as Grower’s Slow Release (item #3263) applied in spring
• Avoid excessive nitrogen to prevent excess foliage at the expense of blooms
OVERWINTERING
• After the first fall frost, dig up bulbs and cut off the tops close to the bulb
• Cure bulbs like gladiolus before storing
• Store at 8–10°C in a dry, well-ventilated space for winter
