PLANTING
Ferns prefer shady locations protected from strong winds. Soil preparation: Incorporate organic matter such as leaf mold or compost into the planting area. Depth: Cover the crown with 1 in. of soil.
Watering: Water deeply after planting to establish moisture.
TIMING
Best planted in spring or early fall to allow for strong root establishment.
SOIL & WATERING
Soil type: Rich, well-draining soil with organic matter. Watering: Keep soil constantly moist; ferns do not tolerate drought well.
FERTILIZING
Generally not required, but an occasional application of compost or organic fertilizer in spring can encourage healthy growth.
WINTER CARE
Snow coverage is usually sufficient for winter protection; additional mulch is rarely needed. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON PERENNIAL CARE SEE: TIPS FOR PERENNIALS
