PLANTING
Hops thrive in full sun, so choose a location that gets sunlight for most or all of the day. Since hops are climbing vines, they require strong support, such as trellises, tall poles, or sturdy twine. Avoid planting near electrical wires, as the sprawling vines can become problematic.
Soil: Well-drained, loamy soil with a pH of 6.5-8.0 is best. Hops require high amounts of potassium, phosphates, and nitrogen, so amend soil with compost, manure, or commercial fertilizer. Planting Depth: Place the long root 1 in. deep, lying parallel to the surface, with buds pointing up.
Watering: First-year plants need frequent, light waterings to help establish roots. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and reduce weeds. Once established, deep watering (such as drip irrigation) is recommended.
Fertilizing: Apply Rose & Strawberry 10-52-17 (item #3256) fertilizer regularly until mid-July. Training the Vine: When vines reach 1ft. in height, select three strong vines and train them to climb the support structure by wrapping them clockwise.
GROWTH & MAINTENANCE
Hops grow extremely fast, sometimes up to 1ft. per day. By mid-summer, they reach their full height of 15-25ft. and begin producing sidearms that will bear flowers. Prevent excessive tangling for better growth.
First-year plants focus on root establishment, so don’t expect many flowers in year one. Full production begins in the second year.
DISEASES & PESTS
Common Diseases: Downy Mildew - Causes brittle or spiky shoots, curled leaves with a silvery upper surface and black underside. Remove infected leaves and use a copper-based fungicide to prevent spread. Avoid overhead watering to keep foliage dry.
Verticillium Wilt - Causes dull green leaves with yellow bands. Remove infected leaves and use the same fungicide as for downy mildew. Common Pests: Hop Aphids - Pale green bugs that rapidly multiply on the undersides of leaves.
Treat with insecticidal soap. Spider Mites - Tiny pests that cause white webbing under leaves and rust-colored cones. They prefer sunny spots, so inspect the top parts of the vine first.
Many sprays for aphids also work against spider mites.
