QUICK FACTS

  • Sun Requirements: Or Wind
  • Soil: & Planting Depth: Plant 1-2 In
  • Height: Or To Control Vigorous Growth

TATARIAN MAPLE

IMPORTANT! This type of tree is slow to break dormancy! To speed up the process: • Before planting, soak the entire tree (roots and branches) in water or cover the whole plant in a bed of moist peat moss or straw for 2-4 days. • Check daily for buds breaking or sprouting.

Once this occurs, plant as usual.

PLANTING & CARE

Watering: Young trees need ample water to establish—generous watering twice a week for the first two months, or three times if conditions are very dry. Soil & Planting Depth: Plant 1-2 in. lower than the original soil mark. Always dig a hole large enough to spread roots evenly.

Root Care: Remove and discard cedar packing material from the roots; do not place it in the planting hole. Fertilizing: Apply a light feeding of fertilizer such as Myke Tree & Shrub (item #EW10) after planting, then every 2-3 weeks until late August. Root Protection: Never let exposed roots dry out in sun or wind.

If planting is delayed, keep roots soaking in water and store in a cool place.

PRUNING

Prune to maintain the desired shape and height or to control vigorous growth. Heavy pruning is best done in April or May before leaves appear. Never remove more than 25% of living branches at one time.

HEDGING & WINDBREAKS

Tatarian Maple can be used for low-growing hedges. Space plants 18-36 in. apart in rows. Hedges may be planted in single or double staggered rows for a thicker, denser hedge.
