Phaseolus vulgaris

With striking purple pods that transform into a deep green once cooked, Purple Royalty beans make a vibrant addition to your garden and plate. Known for their rich flavour and stringless texture, these heirloom beans are also recognized for their superior germination in colder soils, making them an excellent choice for Canadian gardeners. The compact bush habit makes them easy to manage, yielding delicious beans all season long.

Size: Plants reach about 18 to 24 in. tall and produce 5 to 6 in. long pods.

Yield: High yields of stringless beans, perfect for fresh eating or preserving.

Taste: Rich, earthy flavour with tender, stringless pods.

How to use: Ideal for salads, stir-fry, or as a delicious side dish when steamed or sautéed.

Planting tips: Sow seeds 1 in. deep in well-drained soil after the last frost, spacing plants 3 to 4 in. apart. Prefers full sun and well-amended soil for optimal growth.

Harvest tips: Beans are ready to pick when pods are firm and glossy; harvest regularly to encourage further production.

These beans grow well in our short season here in Northern Ontario, are very tasty eaten raw or steamed and are highly productive as well as being beautifully-coloured and rich in antioxidants due to their vibrant hue. Always valued as freshly-grown summer treats!
