Plant Chokecherry Robert at the front - its rich red foliage and grape-sized fruit (ideal for wine, jams, jellies, and fresh eating) tops out at 10 ft., giving an attractive, productive understory. Behind it, Common Caragana fills the mid-layer at ~18 ft. with cheerful pea-shaped yellow flowers in late spring and a bright yellow flush in fall. The Shelterbelt Willow reaches ~25 ft. - very drought tolerant, far less prone to branch drop than most willows, and extremely fast to establish as a wind barrier. The Green Giant Poplar anchors the canopy at ~60 ft., often adding up to 6 ft. of growth in a single season, seedless and drought tolerant, with parent trees proven in a Saskatoon shelterbelt for over 30 years. Together the four species form a true layered windbreak that establishes quickly and holds for the long term.
