The item you purchased was young rootstock, which is different from an established nursery tree. Rootstock is a young, dormant plant, and because it is shipped while dormant, it often looks like little more than a slender stick with roots. This appearance is completely normal for bare-root plants.

Although it may resemble a 'toothpick' when it arrives, a healthy dormant rootstock contains the energy it needs to establish and begin growing once planted under the right conditions. We understand that this can be surprising if you were expecting a larger, established tree, and we're always looking for ways to better communicate what customers should expect when purchasing young rootstock.
