Blackberry Chester

Customers have been requesting a hardy Blackberry for years and now we have them! "Chester" forms huge arching canes and astonishingly large, deep black, very sweet berries. Ideal eaten fresh or made into preserves and blackberry wine or just frozen for later use. Very vigorous vine, growing 6-9ft. easily, so space is essential! Fruit starts to mature in late August and continues for several weeks. Grow Chester up a trellis or along a fence where the self-supporting stems will hold themselves up and offer you their rich pickings!

Likes full sun and a moist rich soil. Grow in rows, spacing the plants at least 6ft. apart and with support if possible, stakes or trellis. They are a very vigorous grower up to 10ft. easily

I’ve bought twice & they grow well off of the start but by the end of July they all slowly die from the root regardless of watering & fertilizing. Won’t try again

We’re very sorry to hear that you’ve had this experience with the Chester Blackberries, especially after giving them a second try.

It is certainly disappointing to have the plants establish and grow well initially, only to have them decline later in the season. While watering and fertilizing are important, there can be other factors that contribute to this type of decline, including soil drainage, root or crown issues, and environmental stress.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re sorry that the plants did not perform as expected and appreciate your feedback.
