Big Bluestem 'Blue Steel' puts the blue back in this native prairie grass. It forms a dense, upright clump of steel-blue foliage with purple highlights. It's a cool-toned alternative to the red-focused varieties.
The blue and purple tones get stronger as the season goes on and carry the colour well into fall. Flower spikes in matching tones rise above the clump for texture and movement. Its strong upright habit gives the garden structure through winter.
Known as the "monarch of the prairie", big bluestem was once the main grass of the North American tallgrass prairie. 'Blue Steel' handles tough conditions, including heavy clay, and adapts to a range of soils as long as it gets full sun. Use it for screening, meadows, naturalized areas and modern landscapes. It also provides nesting material for birds.
