Lactuca sativa
Summertime is a heat resistant and bolt tolerant crisp head lettuce that delivers solid, lush heads without the bitterness common in many varieties. Known for its vibrant colour and fine leaf texture, this lettuce promises both visual appeal and high quality. Ideal for summer gardens, it keeps producing fresh leaves throughout the season, ensuring you have a consistent supply of delicious greens.
Size: Mature heads reach approximately 8 in. across, offering a crisp and satisfying crunch.
Yield: With successive plantings every 10 to 14 days, you can enjoy fresh lettuce all summer long, providing ample harvests from each plant.
Taste: Crisp with a refreshing flavour that is never bitter, making it enjoyable in salads and sandwiches.
How to use: Perfect for salads, sandwiches, and garnishes. This lettuce can also be grown as an attractive contrast plant in flower gardens.
Planting tips: Sow seeds outdoors as soon as soil conditions permit, covering them lightly with soil. Space seeds 6 to 7 per foot of row, thinning to 8 in. apart when seedlings are about 2 in. high. Preferring average garden soil in a sunny location, Summertime thrives in well-drained conditions.
Harvest tips: Harvest heads when they are firm and plump, cutting them just above the soil line to encourage regrowth.
