Abelmoschus esculentus

Okra Jambalaya is a highly productive variety known for its tender pods perfect for enhancing soups, stews, and relishes with flavour and natural thickening qualities. The upright plant structure not only supports generous yields of attractive, green, asymmetric pods but also serves as a beautiful feature in any garden. Harvesting the immature pods early promotes a long growing season, allowing home gardeners to enjoy fresh okra from their own plots.

Size: Mature plants reach approximately 4 ft. tall with a spread of 18 to 24 in.

Yield: Produces a continuous harvest of tender, immature pods throughout the growing season.

Taste: Fresh pods have a mild, slightly grassy flavour that becomes richer when cooked.

How to use: Ideal for cooking in dishes such as gumbo, or simply steamed as a side. Young pods can be sliced and used in salads or pickled for added zest.

Planting tips: Sow seeds in warm, well-drained soil in full sun after the last frost. Space seedlings 12 to 18 in. apart to allow for optimal growth. These plants thrive in light, fertile soil that is enriched with organic matter and it is recommended to apply moderate fertiliser during the growing season.

Harvest tips: Harvest okra pods when they are still young and tender, generally 3 to 4 in. long. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to produce more pods.
