Physalis ixocarpa

The Purple Tomatillo brings a unique flair to your garden with its striking colour and extended storage ability after harvest. This decorative fruit has an interesting growth habit, maturing into a round shape similar to tomatoes, so it adds visual interest while producing delicious fruit. As the fruit ripens, keep them exposed to light to intensify their beautiful purple skin pigment.

Size: Mature fruits reach approximately 2 in. in diameter, encased in a paper-thin, burlap-toned husk.

Yield: Harvest multiple fruits per plant throughout the growing season, with each plant producing generously.

Taste: Sweet-tart flavour profile with citrus notes of lemon and lime, complemented by sub-acid hints of plum and pear.

How to use: Enjoy raw in salsas or cooked to enhance their flavour further and to add depth to your dishes.

Planting tips: Start seeds indoors 3 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds at a depth of 1/4 in. in moist, warm soil maintained around 24°C for optimal germination. Once seedlings sprout, ensure they receive 14-16 hours of light daily.

Harvest tips: The tomatillos are ready to harvest once their husks become loose. Collect when firm and fully developed for the best flavour.

Pelleted seed.
