Petroselinum crispum

Turnip-rooted parsley features slender, parsnip-like roots that grow up to 6 in. long, offering a delicate parsley flavour perfect for seasoning soups and stews. This dual-purpose herb does more than just delight in the kitchen, as it also produces coarse, dark green leaves that can be used fresh as a parsley-flavoured garnish. With its edible roots and foliage, as well as excellent storage capabilities through winter, turnip-rooted parsley is a traditional and versatile addition to any kitchen garden.

Size: Mature plants reach about 12 to 18 in. tall with a spread of 8 to 12 in.

Yield: Both roots and leaves can be harvested, allowing for continuous picking throughout the season.

Taste: The roots provide a mild and earthy parsley flavour, while the leaves offer a fresh, herbaceous quality.

How to use: Use the roots for soups and stews, and the leaves for fresh garnishes or salads. Ideal for enhancing a variety of dishes.

Planting tips: Sow seeds in fully sunlit areas with well-drained soil; ensure they receive at least 5 hours of direct sunlight daily. Parsley flourishes best in sandy soil rich in organic matter, such as peat moss.

Harvest tips: Harvest roots once fully matured and the leaves can be regularly snipped to encourage regrowth. Look for stout roots and fresh green foliage for optimal quality.

I like this plant as an alternative to parsnips. They are easier to germinate and produce a mild flavoured root.
