Description

Indigenous communities like the Anishinaabeg have engaged in agriculture for millennia. They have a tradition, still ongoing, of cultivating various plants in harmony to optimize harvests, a practice known as companion planting.
One of the most prevalent instances of this practice is the Three Sisters: corn, beans, and squash. Corn grows tall and functions as a support for the beans to climb. The beans enrich the soil by adding nitrogen, benefiting their companion plants. Meanwhile, squash spreads its large leaves across the ground, retaining soil moisture, and its prickles act as protection against rabbits for its companions.
Together, the three sisters provide both sustainable soil fertility as well as a healthy diet. Perfection! We have selected some varieties that pair well together, keeping the 3 sisters in mind.
