Description
Small lilac-colored blooms close in daytime, open towards evening, filling the air with perfume. A few patches tucked in corners will scent the whole area around the home. Ht 30 cm (1 ft). No garden is complete without Matthiola! Grows quickly from outdoor seeding. Origin: S. E. Europe & Asia.
Planting Instructions
Seed directly into the garden after the soil has warmed in the spring. Cover seed lightly and press soil down. Keep moist until all seeds sprout. Thin plants to 25 cm (10 in) apart. For earlier blooms start seed 2 weeks in advance of intended date for moving plants to the garden. Press seed into soil, do not cover. Germinates best at 21 C (72 F) usually in 7-10 days. Fertilize every 2 weeks with 10-52-17 and liquid seaweed for strong healthy plants. Garden spacing 25 cm (10 in) apart.
